Margaret, Have you tried searching for the birth record? You could put some details on here if your friend wants some help. Heather |

I think thats unlikely - he would have needed a copy of his birth cert when he started work. Ive got my dads from then (Bermondsey 1914). And when he joined the forces (if he did), May be dad didnt want him to see it? Could even be that they gave him a name that they then didnt use! |

Margaret I'm not really supprised as my great grandmother was not registered. My grandmother tried to apply for the birth certificate to get her mum a pension and failed. I have huntted for it for years and still can't find it. My gratgrandmother should, from what she knew, be born in 1900 but she's not on the 1901 census so I think she was mistaken by a year or 2. If you want us to have a look and see if anyone can find a record of the birth, I'll try to help where I can. Your friend could work of a marriage certificate as that gives the fathers name, if there is definnatly no birth certificate. Lunar xXx p.s. could your friends father-in-law have been born overseas? he wouldn't have a british birth certificate if he was. |

Margaret He could esily be mistaken. My grandmothers little sister had no idea of when her birthday (June 1931) was other than what her mother had said for the kid to get a job. My great-grandmother lied and altered the DoB by over 6months. The girl was only 13 but mum made out she was 14 so she could take a waitressing job. The poor kid only found out when she ordered her birth certificate to get a passport when she got married. |

Yes that is the birth I saw must be going cross eyed not the right place just had another look at it. He said they came from Cork Ireland but his father was born here, there are few on the 1901 census living that area from Ireland. Margaret |

Its amazing how often people are adament about dates but you find out they are wrong. S o it would be checking that one out wouldnt it. Unless there is some reason dad didnt want to register him - though cant think what. |
