This lodger appears on the 1861 census: John Hill abt 1842 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Lodger Bilston Staffordshire Later the same year he marries and gives his father's details as ''John Hill, Bricklayer''. I think these are his parents and siblings on the same census: John Hill abt 1816 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Head Bilston Staffordshire Fanny Hill abt 1814 Daley, Shropshire, England Wife Bilston Staffordshire James Hill abt 1839 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Son Bilston Staffordshire Mary Hill abt 1841 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Daughter Bilston Staffordshire Henry Hill abt 1846 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Son Bilston Staffordshire Samuel Hill abt 1851 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Son Bilston Staffordshire Thomas Hill abt 1853 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Son Bilston Staffordshire William Hill abt 1857 Bilston, Staffordshire, England Son Bilston Staffordshire The head of the above family is a Bricklayer. Right, I thought.....I'll go back to 1851 and find this family......hopefully they will have the additional son, John, aged about 9, living with them..........They OUGHT to be living in Bilston, as all the children were born there................ Gggrrrrrrrr!!! Can't find ANY of them ANYWHERE in 1851!!!! Grrrrr!!!! Can anyone else see them?????? Merry x |

If you find other John Hills born about 1842 in Bilston with different parents in 1851, I have traced those ones forward to prove they are not my lodger, (if you know what I mean)!! Who is crap?? Moi???!!! Merry |

Tackling this from a different angle, Bilston is in Wolverhampton reg district, so here is a poss. birth - its the only one on Ancestry civil reg for John Hill, b. 1842 in Wolverhampton: Hill, John Record Type: Births Quarter: June Year: 1842 District: Wolverhampton County: Shropshire Staffordshire West Midlands Volume: 17 Page: 371 This would give you an address and confirm his parents' names. Possibly Fanny is Frances or even a different name altogether, or she may be John senior's 2nd wife! nell |

Merry On another thread, I put some dodgy mistranscriptions, one of them has for name 'absent' so I think this might be where your lot were. It is *****y frustrating, I feel the same about those blinky Broad brothers and George Matthews who is there in 1871 and 1891 but not on 1881!!!! nell |

Yeh, Looks as if the birth cert would be the way to go........Trouble is, there are several more John Hill's either 1841 or 1843 (I forget!)....and it isn't my tree so was hoping not to need to spend!! Before I do that...I might see if anyone has a CD for Staffs via RO board....maybe there are some pages on that which are not showing on Ancestry!! Thanks for looking everyone! Merry x |
