How could I find the records of my great grandmother? I know birth name and approx. date and who adopted her but can't find any records of her birth. Although she was adopted by the age of 2, interestingly her father's name and occupation are on her marriage certificate. She may have been born in England or Wales. Please does anyone have any ideas?

There werent any official adoptions then Im afraid - not til about the 1920's I believe. It was all very informal. Often the child of a neighbour or a relative who had died. Just give the details you have and people will try to find her birth.

Janet, Have you traced her on any census? Elaine x.

Formal legal adoption didn't occur until 1927 so there wouldn't be any official records. Have you tried tracing her or the father named on her marriage cert on the census? Do you know why she was adopted - did her parents die? nell

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I don't think I'm going to finf Lillie Alice Roberts easily. Her adopted father was Joe Bancroft and the real one wasJohn Roberts. How do you begin towork out who's who on the census with such common names. Virtually everyone in the Wrexham area seems to have been called Roberts!

Hi, You could try the registry office where you think she was born especially if you know her fathers name and approximate date of birth. Kind Regards X

My husbands grandfather Edmund Atkins 1867 was 'adopted'. On his birth cert was his mothers name so we have traced her. On the 1871 he is described as adopted but given the name Atkinson though his 'parents' were the Greenaways . On the 1881 he is described as a boarder. The woman who 'adopted' him, Mrs Greenaway, used to be the servant of his birth mothers grandfather. All this was gathered from censuses.
