I have boatmen in my family and they are just ordinary folk who lived on boats as opposed to in houses. They are normally listed on the census same as anyone else. The problem is, boats are mobile so they could be anywhere! Sam x

My relative was a chief boatman and coastguard. He didn't live on a boat i would guess. He joined the Navy. Steve

Steve Would his residence on a census give a clue?? Could be a canal - lived and worked on or If he lived near the coast - could be Navy or fisherman Elly

He is definitely Navy. I would imagine they would have this kinda thing in the coastguard. Steve

Just checked on the census details for mine and it says Address Coastguard station Whitburn Durham. Dont know the area at all, he was born in Portsmouth so guess 'the sea' is the connection! Michele

I have a boatman in my ancestors and it's on the canal around Dudley. Another use of the term might be for someone who mans a small passenger craft.

Hi Steve, You haven't said when or where your ancestor was in the Coastguard. Have you tried the national archive holding of RN members. Royal Naval Seamen (1853 - 1923)- you can download service records (if available) for £3.50 Also I think that there are a could of online message baords which are devoted to coastguards. Google or PM me. Pete
