Hello All, I am having trouble deciphering a place of birth for one of my relatives. It was transcribed from the 1851 census as 'Lincolnshire, Stigua'. Have asked Jeeves and Google and they have never heard of the place! Anyone with local knowledge got any ideas where this could be? (1851 Census ref HO 107/1827 Folio 18 Pg 206). Thanks Cherie P.S. Won't be able to check for answers to this until late this evening. |

Have been unable to find this on Ancestry - can you give me a name? I am fairly certain that this is a mistranscription. Can't see anything likely in Genuki's list of Lincs towns & parishes. nell |

Hello Nell, Trust me to forget to include the name!! It was Sarah Allen aged 67 (second person on census page). I'm sure it is a mistranscription but I can't read it any better than the person who transcribed it! Thanks so much for looking. Cherie |

Well you can see why it's been transcribed as Stigua (or Stiguee, I suppose it could be). Unfortunately, according to the current OS Gazetteer, there's only one place in GB which starts Stig... and that's in Orkney - and is Stigland or something (have shut the book, and put it away). If it really does start Stig.... then it's the name of a place which is no longer marked on the map - so you're in for a challenge here, I'm afraid! Apart from one instance of Slight... in Cumbria, all places starting Slig... seem to be in Scotland. So... What would sound like Stigua to a Norfolk enumerator, when pronounced by a Lincolnshire person (perhaps)? Christine |

Cherie Could it be Stickney or Stickford? Both small villages near Coningsby, Lincolnshire. Joy |

Does she have a husband? Perhaps find a wedding to get a bride's name, then look at IGI for a baptism. All I can think of at the moment is Stickney. |

I can imagine that Stickney, translated into Norfolk, might well sound like Stignee. I had another look: the U of the transcription, actually looks very like the last letter of the surname - i.e. N I'd hoped the Lincolnshire marriage databases might be of use, but they don't start until the GRO - i.e. 1837, and go up to 1850. Can't find the marriage, though, even on IGI. But someone did say that the records on IGI are available on cyclically, so it may be there another time. Christine |

Thanks for going to so much trouble Christine. As ever I am amazed by the different ideas that people on this site come up with to solve a problem. Ingeneous! It certainly sounds like Stickney is the most likely place. I would never have come up with that on my own! I will start investigating along that route. Thanks to you and everyone above again.
