Could someone help with reading Occupation on the 1861 See below.

Come accross an awful census page (writing) John Mitchell born 1812, Bath Somerset. In 1861, still in Somerset, in Lyncombe & Widcombe Parish. Occupation to me looks like 'expert gilder...but can't read the rest. Would be interested in others thoughts. (In 1851 a Carver (I think!) Journeyman) Cheers Helen

Is it the 1861 or 1871 that you're looking at. In 1871 his occupation is Carver and Gilder. Kath. x

In 1861 it says Carver and Gilder employing 2 men and 6 boys. The line under the first word is just a mark made by the enumerator as he was checking off the entries. Kath. x

Sorry Kath - I updated my message at the last minute. It's 1861 I'm refering to. Having a dizzy moment! (I've just seen the 1871- Carver & Gilder) My mistake - sorry x

In 1861 I think it says: Carver & Guilder Employing 2 Men & 6 Boys The downward line under Carver is a tick for some other record made by the enumerators checker. Makes Carver look like Expert!! Merry
