Merry I have just been looking at past threads for info on tracing divorces and noticed that you could access the Times Archives. Any chance you could look up something for me?? Pretty please. I am looking to see if a relative got round to getting divorced before he remarried in 1936. His first marriage was 1929. His second marriage certificate states he was a 'bachelor' so I am kind of thinking the 2nd marriage was possibly invalid. I haven't found a death for the first wife. The names are Margaret and Francis Gilmour and they married in Liverpool/West Derby. Can you help? Frizzy Liz

Is a divorce likely to be in the times newspaper- wouldnt have thought so unless they were prominent people. merry may still look for you/think differently

Merry had replied to a few of the threads I looked up offering to look a divorce up, although he did say the later the date from 1920s or 30s the less likely they are to be found as divorce became much more common. Apparently the Times used to publish lists - not too sure if it was all and sundry or just a selection. FL

Oh Shucks....I could do you K and A L Gilmour, divorce made absolute 24th Jan 1933, but none with the initials you want! I would have thought that if he lied as you say, at the second marriage, that would be either because he had not been divorced, or he thought his second wife would not approve of marrying a divorcee, so he lied to her....... Can't tell which, that's the problem..... Merry

OOOPS!!! Sorry Monty. Must have been thinking about the War and that Montgomery! Thanks for you help. Do you think I should investigate the possibility of a divorce any further or just assume his second marriage (to my grandmother) was bigamous. Although look how wrong I was when I assumed you were a bloke! Other facts I have unearthed suggests the man in question didn't always tell the truth, so it seems likely he wasn't divorced when he 'remarried'. Fizzy

I'm not that old Frizzy/Fizzy!!! Goodness knows about your rellie.........I suppose the chances are slightly in favour of him being a bigamist....... My gran's first marriage was to someone who said ''bachelor'' and he had been married for 9 years already..............maybe he forgot?? LOL Am going off now to change my name to Bernard. :O(( Merry

Perhaps I should change mine to Dizzy Lizzy? Then I might have an excuse for any clangers I drop in future.
