Why can't I find birth ref?

I have found my GG Grandfather Alfred Beanland on all the census from 1851 – 1901, I also have his marriage cert, so I know he was born in 1841 in Bradford. I have seen him on someones site and they had him as being born 16th June 1841 in Bradford. So why can’t I find his birth ref? I have looked on free bmd, Ancestry and 1837 from the beginning of 1840 to the end of 1842. Would I be better looking at the records at the library? Thanks Misty x

Misty As registration was not compulsary until 1875 there is also the possibility that he wasn't registered. Joy

Thanks Joy, I didn't know that. > Jess I havn't seen a birth or christening record I just assumed that as some one else had a date of birth they must have bought his certificate. > Looks like I will have to check the parish records Thanks Misty x

Could he have been born before his mother married and so registered in her maiden name? Kath. x

You say you have Alfred on the 1851 census. Which one is he? Who are his parents? Kath. x
