tracking down an estate that went to the crown

As he seems to have left a will you could search the National Probate Calendar (index) if you can access it in a records office or probate office, or the Probate Office in York will undertake a 4 year search and supply a copy of the will for £5. Someone on here was also offering to search in Exeter Probate Office which has the complete set of index books. PS Have nudged the thread Q re Wills which has address of York Office and details Val from Exeter who has access to Exeter office. |

I have a relative who left the family behind and began his life again in England. He was Scots by birth and I know his DOB and DOM, but when he died in the 1980s he left all his possessions to his only daughter who never knew him ( my gran) . She has since died and no-one knows where to start looking for this relative in England. His estate was turned down by my Gran so I assume it reverted to the crown. How do I go about trying to find the estate and really the DOD of this mystery relative ( my GG gradfather). Thanks Ian |
