I got a new computer and my bookmarks are all messed up, lost, in different places... I can no longer find the link to a page where I was able to look up newspaper announcements ( births, marriages etc) in the South Normanton/ Mansfield ( Derbyshire/ Nottinghamshire) area in the late 1800s early /1900s. I remember that the site was owned by a person and not a big company, and that you had to pay for the copy of the announcement. I found several of my Surgey ancestors there and intended to buy some when I had some spare money. Now I have the cash and can't find the web site!!! Did I imagine it, or does someone else know the site I am thinking of? Fingers crossed... It's called 'Family Ties' http://www(.)datagrid.co.uk/familyties/default.asp and anyone researching in the Mansfield area should take a look. Thanks for all your suggestions. |

Have you tried googling combinations of critical words? Don't forget that, if you want google to treat a set of words (such as a name) as a single item, you need to put them inside double inverted commas. Christine |

I've tied myself in knots with various word combinations, and wracked my brain trying to remember exactly how I ended up at the website in the first place, all to no avail. |

I find that the best way to deal with bookmarks is to export My Favourites to a floppy disc. FDs are a bit 'old hat' now but their capacity is more suited to saving small items like Favourites lists and you should in any case back up yr bookmarks on a regular basis in case of problems like those described...J. |

The problem was that the 'Sytems Administrator' ie my husband, got the new machine, dismantled the old one, and set it all up before I had time to do anything. He exported 'stuff' but I'm not sure that all of it made it over, and if it did, it's in different places and driving me crazy. He is a professor in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institiute of Technology, and professes to know what he is doing. I am trawling through my disorganized bookmarks - it has to be there somewhere, but just wondered if another North East Derbyshire researcher knew where it was. Thanks for your suggestions. |

It is a notorious fact (alleged myth) that electricians have bare wires in their homes, plumbers have leaking pipes, and so on! Clearly this also applies to computer experts! Christine |

Christine, One time, about 10 years ago, he emerged from his study, looking somewhat dazed. He had been adding some hardware or other to his computer and had caused smoke to pour forth. It seemed to work OK though so he was satisfied. |
