I have a marriage certificate where both spaces for the father have a line. I know that the groom was in fact illegitimate, but the bride's biological father was dead. She was only five years old when he died, and her mother subsequently remarried. Her step-father was alive at the time she got married, and she didn't use his surname, so she was aware that he wasn't her father. I also have a certificate where the bride's father is given as 'William', when in fact he was named 'Robert'. The grooms father was William, so I suspect it was a typo. The bride was illiterate, so I guess she couldn't tell.

she would have been illegitimate for sure. check the parish registers of the village where she was born as sometimes the bapt record will name the father even if the parents weren't married. Lynda

I have a marriage certificate from 1849, in the details for the brides father there is just a line, does this mean he didn't attend the wedding for some reason, or was he not known. any thoughts please.
