If he was a well-known/wealthy chap his obituary would be in the local paper. Local newspapers are at the British Library Newspaper Library in Colindale, North West London, but also local history centres and county libraries/records offices often have them on microfiche. You might find, if you have an exact date, that they could look for a search for a report of his death and/or funeral. My grandmother kindly kept various obits, but cut them out of the paper, so I had no idea a) how these people were related to us and b) when they died, but I've sorted most of it out now. nell |

Is there a way of searching for obituaries? The chap I am interested in died 1890, shortly after marrying for the 2nd time. He was quite a prominent solicitor in Bloomsbury (I think!!) and lived in a substantial house, with more than a few servants, in Wanstead. He left money to the Lameus(?) Society - what was this - does anyone know - and could I find out more about him if I managed to find out more about it? It seems his rellies, he had no children of his own, were still squabbling about things several years after his death - the Times Archives, ( couldn't find an Obits. section), has a notice that the Chancery Division was hearing an action 6 years later in connection with him. I have made another posting under 'High Court' - would love to be able to 'read all about it'! Would someone point me in the right direction, please. Rosi |
