'J. Ashcroft was committed for trial on 1st July 1813 by Ralph Fletcher Esq., a County Magistrate. He was charged with another prisoner, Thomas Philips, and accused of “having stolen a Quantity of cambric, calico and gingham Pieces, in the bleaching grounds of Joseph Ridgway, Thomas Ridgway the Elder and Thomas Ridgway the Younger, at Horwich”. Theft of cloth from drying grounds was an extremely common offence in this county. Horwich is near Bolton, and about fifteen miles from Manchester. His trial took pace at the Assizes at Lancaster, which commenced on 4th September 1814, and he was sentenced to fourteen years Transportation. He was removed from Lancaster Castle with some twenty two other convicts on or about 20th September 1813, destined for the Hulks at Langston Harbour, near Portsmouth, and arrived at Langston on 12th October. Then sailed on the “Surrey” for Australia. |
