Hi thank you all for your help, Albert had Stomach Cancer when he died. He was a waiter and his father was a tobacconist according to his marriage certificate. He married in 1914 in Southend. Lucia :-) |

Hi Lucia What is Albert's own occupation? Is it the same on marriage and death certificate? Where does the marriage take place? Before he ended up in the hospital, he may have been in directories and / or electoral rolls, which would at least show whether he moved around or stayed in one place. |

If you google mental asylum Coulsdon you get a great illustration of Cane Hill Hospital. |

Lucia I vaguely remember this. I went to school in Old Coulsdon, and I presume the two asylums you checked out were Cane Hill and Netherne. Did we raise the idea that he might have died in an ordinary hospital? What was his cause of death? nell |

I've been looking for information about my great grandfather and have been at a brick wall for ages. His name is Albert Goodge and he was born c1879. I have his death certificate. I knew that he was in a mental asylum but I didn't know which as the certificate only said 'The Hospital, Coulsdon'. Some very kind and generous people have checked up records of both asylums but there is no record of him at either. So I'm not sure where to go next. No one in the family knows anything about his origins. I also have his marriage certificate which gives the father as Alfred. But I haven't been able to find Albert with a father called Alfred. I've been trying to search for a birth certificate but I don't know where in the world he came from. Can anyone help? P.S (I'm sorry if I've asked for help before on this). Lucia :-) |
