I have 'my Gran' on 1891 census as 9 months old. Problem is I have her birth certificate for 31st May 1892 (this an original given to me by my Mum) On the census the father and mother are the right names and it's the right road. Do you think they could have had child and called her Rosetta and she died and then they had my Gran and called her the same name? Any suggestions? Linda |

It was quite common practice to name subsequent children after dead siblings - sometimes when the said sibling had only very recently died. Can you find a death in 1891/2 for the first Rosetta? Tina |

1891 census was taken 5 April 1891, so the Rosetta on that would have been born about July 1890. The Rosetta born May 1892 would have been conceived about August 1891, so its possible. Have you checked for a possible Rosetta I birth and death? nell |

Quite probably. This happened a lot in my families. You need to look for the death of the first child. Kath. x |

Just been doing a bit of searching. I have a Rosetta birth Sept. qtr 1890 same reg. disitrict and a Rosetta death December qtr. 1891 same reg. district. Looking at those dates it looks like Great Grandma was pregnant with my Gran before the first Rosetta died. Linda |

Linda It's sad, isn't it. I remember being quite choked when I found my gt grandmother had had to register two of her babies' deaths when she was pregnant with other children. I also have children named for dead siblings. On a useful note, its a good pointer as to when the first child died. nell |

Hi Nell, Yes it's quite a shock. My Gran lived with us all my life and I never knew. If my Mum had known I think she would have said on some of the long 'family talks' we had. Probably my Gran never even knew. How sad. The weirdest thing it that all the times I have looked at that 1891 census thinking it was my Gran and it wasn't. How I could have missed the date I don't know. Linda |
