I'm afraid so Kathleen! This is something I have found varies from cemetery to cemetery, some are great, really helpful and free and others like to charge as much as £30 (naming no names!). The one in question is £10 for a basic search and £35 for a full search. The basic will only tell you where they are in the cemetery and when they were buried. Which I already know! Not sure what information the full search will give, what I really need is who bought the plot and when! S |

Do you have to pay the cemetery for a search Sarah? Our local cemetery office is very good. They will do look-ups and print information off and take you to a particular plot if you can't find it, and they never charge anything. Kath. x |

Update: Not mother - She was Sarah Roberts nee Lincoln. Still working on sister possibility... Perhaps she was buried there and then he purchased adjoinging plot? Why share stone though? Will call office on Monday and pay my money for the search! Any other suggestions most welcome! Sarah |

Have you been in touch with the cemetery office, who may be able to give you more details as to whether Francis Louisa is actually burried at the same plot, or if her name is just listed on the headstone. I think Angela's idea of another plot sharing the headstone might be a good one. It was maybe easier to buy a plot adjoining another family plot. Kath. x |

I think that the distant rellie solution is the most likely. It must still be unusual to have inscriptions on both sides, though. This may sound like a daft question but was there another grave on the other side of the stone which could have 'shared' the same stone? (as in 'feet pointing in the other direction'!!) Maybe your rellies plot was part of a larger family one? |

Plot in the middle of a huge field so unlikely. Plot was very expensive so I can't understand why they would have a reused stone. Distant rellie, possibly - I wondered sister or mother but as I can't find her anywhere I am at a loss. Wondered whether anyone else had ever come across this? |

Just taking a guess here. Do you know who Charles Roberts parents were? If not could this Francis Louisa have been Charles Robert's mother, maiden name Francis Louisa Robert's, who gave birth to your Charles, and then married Charles Ford. Your Charles could have had the inscription put on the back of the headstone when she died, knowing that he wanted to keep the front for himself and his family, or just used the headstone from her grave to save money. Like I said, just a guess. Kath. x |

As Francis Ford died before your rellie bought the plot, is it possible that the stone had been reused and an inscription put on the other side? Was the grave near the side of the cemetery and perhaps the stone was originally against the wall, in which case the earlier inscription wouldn't have shown? Are you sure that Francis Ford wasn't a distant member of the family? |

I have just returned from my first grave hunting expedition with mixed results... Hurray found some, others we had to guess close approximation. One intriguing thing on the grave of my GG Grandmother, Sarah Roberts (formerly Read, nee Gollop). Sarah married Charles Lincoln Roberts in September 1893 after the death of her first husband. Charle bought a plot at Brookwood Cemetery on 17th December 1884 and was duly buried there on 4th November 1903. Sarah was interred there when she died in 1928. Now comes the wierd part... His inscription is on the front of the gravestone along with Sarah. ON THE BACK IS ANOTHER ONE FOR SOMEONE ELSE!!!! Frances Louisa, Wife of Charles Ford (I think), died 1881. I can't find anything on either of them and WHY would this be on the back of his gravestone? HELP, Sarah (Confused of Leicester!) |
