Thanks Nell I'll make a note of that and if I come across this again (I'm sure I will now) I will know what to do. Pam

IF you want to know where your relatives lived in relation to today, you can get tithe maps from records offices which show where cottages were and who rented them from whom, I think. It is maddening when you get just a village name on a certificate, or an address like 'Chedworth - upper end' or '8 The Village, Rendcomb'. I suppose exact addresses with house numbers is about the only real advantage in having London relatives. nell

Thanks Heather & Gwyneth for putting me straight, I haven't come across this before and it was throwing me off a bit. Heather - 1961 - LOL!!......well it was nearly 2am and my brain was falling asleep....I should have been in bed!! Thanks again both of you for helping. Pam

I wish they had named them Gwyn. I live in the next village to where dozens of mine were born (not that I knew that until 2 years ago). Its so frustrating wanting to see where they all lived and all it says on census is 'cottage' or, the biggie, 'near Turnpike'.

I think along the same lines as Heather. We are talking about an era when the community knew one another and there would have been no need for house names or numbers in small communities. I think he means a private dwelling as opposed to Public House or whatever.

Pam, just had a look and I think its a case of a diligent census collector. He even puts 'Cottage unoccupied on Sunday morning' on one of his entries! I think he was just showing the difference between a private dwelling and commercial premises - he has grocers shop listed for one family? If you go back to page 1 of that lot it says Ladbrook Place.

I have found on the 1861 census my 3 x great grand father Thomas hesketh c1840. In the parish of Reigate Foreign in Surrey. On the image where there should be an address the word 'private' - I think that's what it says? is written for the whole of the page. I clicked to the next page, the same thing only half way down the words 'assembly room' is written and then it goes back to 'private'. Any ideas what this is? Any help appreciated. Thanks Pam
