1851 Census Henry Habberfield living in Bristol with wife Charlotte and 2 children 1861 Census Henry Habberfield living in same street in Bristol with wife and children, and a lodger Henry Veal (widower) aged 83. The only marriage I can find for a Henry Habberfield anywhere near the correct time frame is in 1852, one of the 2 females on the page is Charlotte Veal.

Is the lodger the father / or cousin or / uncle of Charlotte? Often happened in my family that the neighbours or lodgers turn out to be relatives. Kim

That's what we think, but why is the marriage only in 1852, when they ahd been having children since 1845, and she is shwon in 1851 Census as his wife

There is a Henry Veale aged 70 living with wife and son in 1851 census. I have come across relatives having 2 spouses of the same name - they don't seem to have any consideration.

The marrying later makes sense, is that something that happened in the 1840's, or could it be a late registration of a wedding.

If you get a birth cert for one of the children it will confirm Charlotte's maiden name. nell

The children on 1851 census might not be Charlotte's. Relationship to 'head' is shown but there could have been a previous wife. Calling oneself 'wife' was probably more respectable in 1891. My great grandmother is listed in that census with her husband and their 3 daughters. She married him in 1892. Yes people did lie.
