Have you or FiL searched the national archives for the medal card? If not, I have included the address. If you look under Military History, you can search under army for the medal card which will give you rank, medals awarded, corps and regement number. You would have to buy the dowload to see the medals but this is the info on a ww1 medal card from my family: Medal card of Osborne, H J Corps............................Regiment No...Rank Royal Field Artillery.........W/1780..........Driver Date 1914-1920 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Thanks for your help, yes Ian I think the medals are within the family but unfortunately we are unable to see them. I think my Father-in-law was hoping to be able to send away for the replicas as he did with his Dad's WW2 medals. Oh well, the search continues. Gaynor :-) ps Is it possible to find his army no. from any of the above mentioned sources?

I believe that gallantry awards were reported in the London Gazette, in which case it might be worth having a look at their searchable online archive. Christine

Gaynor, WW1 medals were posted out to the recipiants, unlike WW2 which have to be claimed. Therefore I expect your man's medals are either somewhere in the family or lost. The silver badge sounds like the Silver Wound Badge, issued to those invalided out of the forces due to wounds received. This appears to be the case here. The National Archives has a searchable database for WW1 campaign medals, but not gallantry awards. Ian

You could try looking at the National Archives at Kew, they might even have his service record.

Hi My Father-in-law is wanting to send for his Grandfather's medals......... WW1 He has sent for his Father's medals WW2 but is finding it more difficult for his Grandfather because he doesn't know the exact regiment or his army number. He thinks he was in the Staffordshire Regiment and thinks he has 3 medals in all..... the usual service medal and two bravery medals, one of which he thinks is the Silver Star for soldiers wounded in the First World War. He thinks he was Demobbed after suffering an attack of Mustard Gas. Does anyone know if you can find out the details required to send for medals by searching with a name for the 1914-18 World War 1? Thanks in anticipation Gaynor
