They are transcriptions of the writing on gravestones or other monuments in churches Info varies - name & date of death, often spouse, sometimes dead children also buried in grave Jay

They are usually done for the whole churchyard/cemetery, regardless of denomination, but ONLY for people who had headstones i.e. not same as burial list, which would record everyone buried there.

Valerie I think MIs are mainly C of E. If you are looking for Jewish burials, there's a site here: www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/ nell

Hi Valerie - Memorial inscriptions can be really useful. I found some on-line for the village where my rellies lived and lo and behold, there were my 4xgreat grandfather, his brother and other members of the family. When I was in the area I was able to find their gravestones dating from the 1830's. Some Family History Societies produce little books of inscriptions for churchyards in their area, so it is worth looking at the website of the Society for the area you are interested in. I bought a book of the inscriptions for Repton in Derbyshire (which is where my dad was born). I found his uncle mentioned on the inscription of the war memorial which told me that he had died in the First World War. There were lots of other rellies too, which gave me their dates of death.
