Thought that I'd knocked over a brick-wall when I found gggf (Edward Gilbert) on the 1851 and subsequently got his marriage cert - I now had his place of birth (Tenterden, Kent) and his father's name (Jeffery Gilbert). Ho-ho I thought, should be easy to get back on this line now, can't be too many Jeffery Gilberts in a little Kent village.... the IGI has no less than five Jeffery Gilbert marriages in Tenterden, and three births! What was it - some local by-law that every third male child in the village must be named Jeffery Gilbert? What's worse, two of them married Mary's, within 16 years of each other, so its hopeless trying to sort out which children belong to which couple as they overlap! The are no less than 16 children fathered by Jeffery Gilberts, with mothers Elizabeth, Ann, and Rebecca as well as Mary. And the IGI baptisms only go back to 1813 anyway. The 1861 throws up five JG's in the village, none of them are my JG of course as he was deceased by the time of his son's marriage in 1838. Will be fun sorting this little lot out, I just hope that there's a bit more identifying information on the parish register than there is on the IGI! Not really a tip, more of a whinge! Richard |
