I have been looking for the birth of Owen Edwin Holland, b c1858, Radnage which registers in Wycombe. He is not listed on 1837 (I have checked 1856 - 1860), but in Dec 1858 there is a 'Male' Holland in Wycombe. Would this mean the baby died soon after, or could it be my Owen? Opinions please...

I have a couple of 'male' and 'female' births that turn up on the later census with names. So I guess it is possible for him to be yours. Have a look for a Male death in the year or so after the birth. That should confirm if he died.

It just means really that they got to the end of the time allowed to register a birth and still hadn't decided on a name, they had to register his birth, so got registered as BOY/child/infant/ whatever the registrar used as his terminology usually Jess the 1861 which you must have i giuess w Record Albert Holland abt 1845 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Son Radnage Buckinghamshire Edward W Holland abt 1852 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Son Radnage Buckinghamshire John Holland abt 1803 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Head Radnage Buckinghamshire Leah Holland abt 1816 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Head Radnage Buckinghamshire Leah Holland abt 1850 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Daughter Radnage Buckinghamshire Martha Holland abt 1840 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Daughter Radnage Buckinghamshire Owen Holland abt 1858 Radnage, Buckinghamshire, England Son Radnage Buckinghamshire Rebecca Holland abt 1850 Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England Daughter Radnage Buckinghamshire Rosette Holland abt 1855 Radnage, Buckinghamshire, England Daughter Radnage Buckinghamshire William Holland abt 1860 Radnage, Buckinghamshire, England Son Radnage Buckinghamshire I looked to see if it said 3 MONTHS in age, but it doesn't. have you found Williams birth reg?

I agree with Jess. The only way you'll know for sure is to order the cert and see if the Fathers name matches the one the Marriage cert (if you have it) and if both parents name match those on any census returns you might have.

Thanks to all for your replies. Oooh Jess, I hadn't noticed that last one! I have ordered the cert using parents names as checking points - it is actually Mar 1858 not Dec, which will tie in with the IGI christening date. Liz x

In case anyone is interested, the cert arrived this morning, and is indeed my one. So.... if you can't find a birth ref by name, look under 'male' and 'female', as it might just be there. Owen was the seventh child, so it is maybe unsurprising they took their time thinking of a name! Liz x
