Help please with finding my gtX3 grandfather on the 1871 or any subsequent census. He was born in Hertford in 1842 and married to Charlotte Ralph in July 1868 in Shoreditch. He also appears in the 1861 census in Hertford St Andrew as a servant. His parents were married in Bishops Stortford, Hertford. I know all this but the 1871 and subsequent censuses seem to be a blank. There are a lot of Jago's in Cornwall and some in Devon, but none that fit the bill in Hertfordshire or London. |

Jess - George's birth certificate shows his parents as being Edward James Jago and Betsy Jago (formerly Hughes). They were married in 1835, George being born in 1842. Charlotte was born in 1847 in Farringdon, Berkshire - I have both her and George's birth certificates and their marriage certificate. No information on siblings of George and no joy on 1851 census samples that might give that kind of information. The Eliza you mention might be a sister. Thanks for your help. |

I have JAGO in my family tree too. Joseph Whitehair JAGO married Mary Stone HOCKADAY in Dartmouth, Devon in 1823. They had five children: Edward Stone, Joseph Edward Stone, Mary Priscilla Stone, William, Harriett and possibly more I don't know about. Many of my Devon ancestors moved away from Devon towards Bristol or London in the mid nineteenth century, presumably to seek more prosperous lifestyles away from seafaring and fishing. If you find any connection, please get in touch. I remeber once reading a well-researched article about the JAGO name distribution (which I'm blowed if I can find now), but I remember reading that the name is more concentrated in Devon/Cornwall, but there are also a number in North Essex and Bishops Stortford is almost on the Essex border. Sorry I can't be more help! I'll post again if I find the article. |

Linda, If you can't find him on any census records then chances are he died and his wife remarried. Can you list his children's names? How about this widow for 1881? If you look at FreeBMD Edward died and Betsy remarried. Looks like she married George Burgess. having read your info it would suggest to me that Edwards mother Betsy either 1)died and he re-married an Ann/Annie 2)was known as Annie. With the distribution of the name (even today ) I would have thought it Highly unlikely there were two Edward Jago's Born in Hertfordshire, let alone the same village. jess |

Thanks to everyone who replied to my message. Christa, your information about the marriage of Betsy Jago looks very promising. The marriage certificate of George in 1868 does not mention his father being deceased, but I understand that this sometimes happens. On the same certificate Edward's profession is recorded as licensed victualler, and on George's birth certificate as publican, but I suppose that they may be regarded as the same occupation. I would be very interested in seeing the information about Jago's that you mention Susan, if you can find it. Thanks again to everyone. |
