Margaret! I may just help you with that! I have Barrett's in my family too, but the furthest i've got in the early 1800's in Gloucestershire, UK. I do know that Barrett is a very common name across the world, with it's origins in France, Ireland, and Pakistan. Apparently it's an old english world meaning 'dispute', but wasn't commonly used as a surname in Britain at this time. But since yours are in Canada, I presume yours will be french! Regards, Paul. |

For those who are interested, anyone can sign up and help transcribe the 1911 census or proof what has been done from any country, not just Canada. I did quite a few pages on the 1901 census and am about to start on the 1911. It is very easy as it links right into the page and you can scroll down one line a time, inputting the information right below it on the same current screen you are looking at. The more hands working on it, the faster it will be done. Sandra in Ontario, Canad |

(Sorry for the delay in answering - had to take my son to soccer) Helen - he lived until 1913. I have him on the 1901 - but only because it is indexed by name. Managed to find him on the 1871 as he was the head of the house. Was easy to find him in 1881 (thank you familysearch). I'm going to have to trawl through the 1911 and 1891 - maybe I'll save that for a cold winters night. Margaret |

Good luck in your search, Margaret - was your rellie still alive in 1901 or 1911? |

Paul, if you want to pretend you have rellies in Canada, you can help me look for mine - I'll let you look all you want!! Looking for Robert George Barrett (born 1822 in London) - should be in Toronto somewhere. He is a barrister. Helen, you can help too!! Margaret |

Automated Genealogy have compiled a name index to the Canadian 1901 census, and have started the 1911. The 1911 index is far from complete at this stage, but worth checking before you spend hours looking through the unindexed images: http://automatedgenealogy(.)com/index.html. By the way, the index is free too! Richard |

Unfortunately this site is only searchable by location and not by family name so if you don't know exactly where your ancestor lived you are up a gum tree ! |
