Thanks Rose for that info. Sam, I have found William living with his family 1n 1861 as Widower, his wife Harigatte was 65 years old on 1851 census. I have looked for a death between 51-61 but can't see it. I think that it was misheard and mispelt when they did the census that's why I want to look at 1841. Many thanks to you all Ellen |

As the above - probably a mistranscription of Harriet. I've seen some weird spellings on the census pages. My Gt Grandmother Georgina was down as Giergianna on one! |

Are the same branch of the family not on 1861 then? Have you looked for a death of Harrigatte or Harriet Cooper between 1851-1861? Sam x |

Hi Ellen, Just to let you know that on the records board Mary Whetton is offering lookups from the 1841 Oxfordshire census. Not sure if she has the actual images but worth asking I should think. Rose |

Many thanks for your suggestions. It had crossed my mind that when they did the census if they spoke with a county dialect that the writer misheard and it could be Harriet Kate or similar and he thought it sounded like Harigatte. I would like to see what is written on the 1841 but I might have to take a trip to Oxford Record Office. Many thanks again Ellen |

I've come across transcriptions where a letter with a hanging downstroke or a tall upstroke was actually a mis-interpretation, by taking a bit of a letter from the name below/above. (The mistake is often quite understandable.) That would make Henrietta a real possibility. Christine |

Could it not just be Harriett? I can't access 1851 at the moment, or I'd have a look at it. |

I managed to look at some 1851 census pages and found a branch of the family. The wife's name looks like Harigatte Cooper, she would have been born in 1786, but I can't find a reference to this Christian name anywhere. I tried google and have tried various other sites to look at old celtic, norse, swedish etc names. Anyone any ideas on variations of this name. Regards Ellen |
