If father Matthew James's occupation was given as Seaman on the marriage cert, this could be him in the 1891: Hammond, Elizabeth abt 1883 Dover, Kent, England Granddaughter St Mary the Virgin Kent Hammond, Margaret abt 1829 Dover, Kent, England Wife St Mary the Virgin Kent Hammond, Matthew abt 1827 Dover, Kent, England Head St Mary the Virgin Kent Hammond, Matthew J abt 1870 Dover, Kent, England Son St Mary the Virgin Kent Hammond, William J abt 1881 Dover, Kent, England Grandson St Mary the Virgin Kent Just a possibility Carol |

If he's a Seaman, he's probably at sea in 1901. |

Looking at the marriage cert again his occupation was given as a painter.........I ahve tried the 1901 census as Maud would have been about 7 |

Is it possible that Maud lied about her age on her marriage certificate in order to marry without parents consent. |

I suppose it is possible she lied about her age but she still should appear on the census.... cant find her death either. but she might have remarried,,,,,,,,,,,,, dont think so........... |

Could she have been born at sea, or overseas, or in Scotland or Ireland? You can try the overseas section on 1837 online for the first two, Scotland's People for Scotland, but as for Ireland... tricky. Kate. |

You have probably seen this already. Could this be Maud's brother? Births Jun 1894 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hammond Matthew James Dover 2a 961 No, just checked on census and his father was John. Rats! I hope you're not easily shocked, but is it possible that Maud was born out of wedlock? In which case her birth would be registered under her mother's maiden name. I can't find a marriage for her parents at the moment, though. Kate. |
