Spelling errors occur everywhere. I have a marriage cert which the groom signed correctly, without noticing that his name had been mispelt by the registrar. As recently as the late 1970s my grandfather's death cert has his place of birth mispelt and his birth year is wrong too. When people register bmds they aren't always focused on checking that they are correct. I was very particular over my marriage cert and my sons' birth certs, but that's because I am a bit of a stickler for accuracy. nell |

Perhaps if you can find out who dealt with the adoption ie Council, Church Society and contact them saying you want contact. She may have left a message for her family. Also if you know the area perhaps a message in the paper. She'd be in her 70's now but perhaps if it was mentioned a relative might see it. All the usual web sites for leaving messages Lookupuk, Adoption match, Missing-you net, friends reunited too plus Channel 4's Lost Touch Teletext page 151 I think |

It would suggest to me that her birth was registered by someone who just wanted it 'over and done with' and that it may have been registered by someone other than her mother (who did register the birth?) As to 'why' many many reasons- They may NOT have been married ,they may have had no where to live, no money, she may have been disabled, Birth mother may have been ill at the time.....or all sorts of other reasons. Have you actually asked the Aunt who gave her away? Jess |

If she was adopted, she will almost certainly have changed her name. I don't know about Scottish adoption laws, but here you can apply to be put on a list which an adopted person can see, so they choose whether or not to contact you. See here for more info: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions/adoptioncontactregister/birth_relative_application.asp |
