probably lol!! Am in the www(.)1851-census etc page ... put the name in the box at the top and click search .... a list appears, with the usual search box underneath .... so I put the name and birthplace/year etc in the box .... and it takes absolutely no notice, just brings up the same list of people born any old date, any old place???? everyone else seems to be happily finding people and I can't!!! PLEASE can someone help me!! Thanks, Maz. XX

Maz Have you clicked on the 'Exact Search' tab at the top of the search box? nell

well I found a few of the missing, but 2 in particular are still nowhere to be seen - will be spending most of today trawling through I expect. Was looking for a Sear family. In 1881 they are mistranscribed as Lear - couldn't find 'em in 1851 - exactly the same mistranscription. Surely 'they' (whoever 'they' are) give the transcribers some samples of handwriting - its not THAT hard to tell a capital L from a capital S surely?? On both occasions it was quite clearly an S - grrrrrrrrrr!!! Maz. XX

Maz Because of the florid handwriting, many initial letters are surprisingly difficult to read. I have the S in my Smoothy family as L or T on some censuses, so they are transcribed as Lenorthey or Timothy! But yesterday, David found my Smoothy as Smarthy and that is actually what is written on the original image!!!!! Good luck. nell

I had my first go on the 1851 census yesterday and I too found my results went on and on. I then tried putting in exact match which gave me no results at all. I then tried 3 stars and got some and there's another tab about listing the ones the 3 stars hadn't given - all the results etc etc. One thing I did find was that Berwick upon Tweed had become Berwickshire, Scotland as place of birth - luckily it wasn't a common name was able to find it. However for those still not finding their rellie the mother of the above was living with her but I would never have guessed the correct name unless I knew it already - Hope had become Hover?!!!!!!!

ok, just found my gt gt grandmother with her aunt and uncle, who very cleverly put her down as born in Essex, when she was born in Cambs - no wonder its taken me all morning! Just goes to show though how worthwhile it is to look up not just your direct lines, but their siblings too - you never know WHO you will find with them!! One more to find now grrrrrrrrr wish I knew some of HIS aunties lol - may have to ask for help in a minute! Maz. XX
