I am trying to find out the identity of a serving policeman (husband's ancestor) in 1920. I have his collar number and know he was living in Hampstead so would have been in the Met. I have a photo that is amongst others of the family and his collar number as opposed to epaulettes is clearly visible. I am at a complete loss as to how to go about this. I have tried emailing the Met without success. I know there is a site which gives on officers who died during service, but can't find anything else except enquiries at Scotland Yard...which I tried....and didn't hear back...not surprisingly! If anyone can suggest another site that I can try I would be very grateful. Thanks, Penny |

There's a site commonly called 'police-orders', the address is www.externalserver.me.uk:8085/ but you can only search by surname or warrant number. The collar number is not the same. Do you have a name or an idea of name at all? Metropolitan police officers' records are kept at The National Archives at Kew. Service records are arranged by warrant number (in practice this is roughly in order of date of joining) and if they retired whilst in the police force, you can also get pension details.
