I have the birth certificate for my 3xgrandfather, George McGladerry, father James, mother Mary formerly CONTEY. I have the family on the 51/61/71 census and James and Mary both just state Ireland as their birthplace. There are no occurances of the surname Contey on Ancestry, Irish Origins or the Ireland records on IGI. I tried CONTI as a variation and none of those either although the IGI gave me CANTEY as an alternative. Can anyone think of any other possible variations for the surname, I've tried adopting an Irish accent and saying it in case it gave me any inspiration but my attempts are worse than useless! Thanks Lou |

Well its a cert from the local RO, written in capital letters and clearly says CONTEY But...they're copying it from the original register so they could have mistaken an L for a T. I hadn't thought about Conley, thanks, I'll have a try using that variation |

And, of course, CONLEY must be related to CONNOLLY (and variations)? Christine |

I'm sorry I asked! I think I'm probably flogging a dead horse here as I don't even know whether James and Mary married in Ireland or here in England or what spelling of their surname each of them would be using. I go cold whenever I find anyone new now till I've seen their birthplace! Thanks everyone for your input! Lou |

Thanks Joy I'll take a look. Got a couple of lines that go back into Ireland so it might give me some leads with those if not with Mary Lou x |
