What was the date of the 1901 census? On the census of 1901 there is an Eleanor R Sherriff, 1 month old. I have found her birth on Free BMDs as Helena Rosetta Sherriff [her correct name] June 1901 At Olaves. Would this be correct? Thanks for any answers, David |

it was taken 31st March 1901 ( I think ) so on the ccensus she could very possibly be 1 month old. You didn't have to register a birth immediatly. Not sure how long you had but june seems a possibly to me if the area is correct. |

Yes, I'm sure that will be the one! The census was taken 31st March, but you had six weeks to register a baby and many many people left it to the last minute. So when she appeared on the census she had still not been registered, but this was probably done within the following two weeks approx. Merry |

I don't think so David as the Census was taken around the begining of April or late March. If you go to the GENUKI or National Archive sites I'm sure you'll find the exact date. Derek |

and St Olave is definitely the correct district for Bermondsey St Pauls where she was born. My father was born on 17th February, but wasn't registered until well into Q2 (though my granddad WAS fined for this lateness!!) Merry |

plus remember that June Q is April/May/June so she could have been registered in April !!......And her name is a bit different ......so I'm with 'Merry' in thinking it is her. |

Thanks for your replies. I thought the birth had to be registered in 2 weeks. 6 weeks would explain it. |

The typically British law on this actually states 42 days.... which is six weeks to the rest of us lol! Merry |
