Thank you, you have all been very helpful. I think Ancestry sounds it bit pricey for me at the moment - I'll have to see how generous my husband is feeling around Christmas time :) |

Even if FREECEN has reasonable coverage of the area that interested, Ancestry has the advantage that you can search the whole of England, Wales, IoM and CI. It is probably the only way that you will find people who have moved around. There are loads of transcription errors but you can usually find people though I think we all have people who are missing (these might not be Ancestry's fault because some census pieces are missing). Unlike census CD-ROMs you can download the image of the page and add to the source information in your family tree program. MB |

At moment, not sure if offer is up, but it was £55 a year. If offer is finished its about £70 a year. That is all the census 24/7 for a year and the images and lots of other goodies like Pallots Marriages (pre 1837 - which I have found several on). For about a quid a week, its a joke because you get SO much. I dont know how anyone doing this hobby could manage without it. |

Well, it is worth trying FreeCEN to see if it covers any of the dates and areas you are looking for. Also try googling them in case somebody has put up a transcription of the particular area you want (especially if it is a small village). And look on UKBMD to see what is available. Also, the whole of 1861 is indexed on 1837 online, you can search it free but have to pay to look at the results. But in general, I agree with Heather. Kate. |

That sounds good:) Are the subscription ones expensive then? |

No free ones - wait for a while and get a sub on ancestry when you will have access to 1851-1901 24/7 |

I have pretty much covered the free census's available, now I would like to fill in some gaps in the family history. Where should I go for the best source on-line for 1841-1871 census? Thanks, Vicky |
