The Genealogist Site - Is it any good?

Can anyone please tell me whether The Genealogist site has any advantage over other pay-as-you go or subscription sites such as 1837, Ancestry of FamilyRelatives? It seems to be quite expensive. Is their BMD facility any better than other sites? Thanks you.

The BMDs aren't any better than 1837. It does, however, have a lot of census data as well. There are quote a few 1841 indexes (including partial Yorkshire!). The downside of the indexes is that you need S&N CDs to use them properly (which I've complained about lol)

As a computer wally, can you please tell me what S&N CDs are, please. What do they do?

S&N Cds are the censuses from genealogy supplies. I think they stock pretty much all the censuses from 1841 onwards.

Thanks, Tracy. I think I will save my money. I already have an Ancestry subscription so I will wait until they get the information on there.

Having used their 1851 index for London as I have the cd's I found that several families missing from the index, I knew they were actually on the census as I had found them by chance.

I've had fantastic results from this site using the indexes for Lancashire and Yorkshire. Agree with Grace though that I'm disappointed with the ones for London. They claim both the 1841 and 1851 are complete yet I have located ancestors on the census, using address from certifcates etc, and they don't appear on the index. The images are very clear so it would be strange if they were mistranscribed Lou

Both the 1841 and the 1851 censuses including transcripts for part of Yorkshire are on FamilyHistoryOnline. I found all my lot on there, but may just have been lucky. I am only really wanting one person in London in 1851, so will wait until Ancestry come up with the goods. I was interested in the Parish Register entries for Hampshire but they seem to be a bit pricy and the coverage is a bit patchy.

Like Tracy I complained about needing to own S&N CDroms for their index reference to be meaningful (a fact that S&N doesn't mention in its publicity). Didn't get a reply! Great PR. Won't be using the index again or buying any more of their census sets.
