Have found my husbands gt grandparents on 1881 Canadian Census, which has them and first two children as born in New Brunswick, Canada, but the eir nationalitys are listed as Scottish for father and children and Irish for the mother. Does anyone know why this is, and any ideas as how I can trace further back from here.

Hi Kathryn I thought that the 1881 Canada census showed birthplace and ethnic origin (not nationality) - which would imply that although they were born in Canada, his forefathers were Scottish and hers were Irish. That's how I would interpret it, anyway. Richard
