I have a copy of a birth cerificate of my father - in -law. He was born 1913. This copy is dated 1st December 1966. In the top right hand corner is a capital 'P' and on the back of the certificate is a type written note saying.. 'This is the Cetificate of Birth marked 'P referred to in the Declaration by Dorothy Maud Moyles made this 24th day of April 1967. Before me, a signature i cant read, A Commissioner for Oaths. I have never seen this before. I hope somebody can clear this query up for me. Thanks Julie

Hi Julie Sounds like it was used as evidence in a hearing of some kind, were his parents divorced, or might she have had to chase the father for maintenance or something - or might he have been adopted and this is his original cert? Trudy

I Don't no but i would think that because it was a copy and probably being used as some legal document eg proof of ID that it was having to be certified as correct Hope this helps Roy

I would very much doubt it was to do with adoption. legal adoptions didnt happen until 1927

Perhaps he needed a copy for a Passport? and she was the one who applied.

Thanks for the replies. I just cant think who Dorothy is, we have no record of a Dorothy Moyles and why would she have her name on the back of his birth cert.? We know that he wasnt adopted, I suppose it could have been for a passport but he never went abroad. Why didn't I ask him before.... too late now. Regards Julie

Was he alive at the time this cert was issued and this ''declaration'' was made by the mystery Dorothy? Merry

Yes he only died 3 years ago. Cant think what it was all about. My mother in law was married before but that was in the 1930s/ 1940s she was divorced and they married in 1951. Julie

Any idea when his parents died? He may have had to prove he was a relative to receive their estate maybe? Karen

hi Julie, I was seconded to a post in Mexico in 1982 and eventually had to supply to the Mexican authorities birth certificate and tertiary educational qualifications certified on the reverse by a Commissioner of Oaths in UK that all certificates were genuine and applied to me. julian
