why a different fathers surname?

My gt gt gt gt grandmothers name was Mary Ann Moule yet on her marriage certificate her fathers name is Robert Kent. She says she was a spinster and i cannot find a previous marriage for her? Any help or ideas would be helpful. i ambanging my head on the wall.

Perhaps she was illegitimate and she was known by her mum's maiden name or her step-father's name. Heather
