Hello I've been researching my dad's family tree. He was adopted in 1939. I've found his birth mother in the 1901 census at the same address as was on his 'real' birth certificate. She was still using her maiden name which was lucky for me. My great grandparents were there as well. George Ward and Mary Jane Ward. I bought their marriage certificate for Mary's maiden name. Mary Jane Lockley father Thomas Lockley (cabinet maker). 1901 census stated she was born in staffordshire and was 32 years old at the time. Great I thought but I've never been able to trace a mary jane lockley that fits the above criteria. Instead I found a family of Lockleys head was Thomas Lockley (cabinet maker) and Hannah Lockley born hanley stoke on trent staffs 1868/69 at 52 ladywood road birmingham on 1881 census. I got Hannah's birth certificate to see if any middle names but only down as Hannah and born in 1868. On the 1891 census at 46 Edbrooke rd paddington london appears thomas lockley great haywood\staffs, Alice Bone (married ) born hanley staffs approx 1866 and mary j ditto sister born hanley staffs approx 1868. It's not clear which surname mary j has. But I do know that Hannah Lockley had a sister alice lockley whose married name was Bone and was born in hanley stoke on trent approx 1866. Does anyone know how to complete this jigsaw or is this information enough to prove the link? Cheers Lesley

Hi Lesley Are you saying that the Thomas Lockey (cabinet maker) in 1881 was the Head of the household and Hannah was a daughter? And again in 1891: was Thomas Lockey (cabinet maker) the father and Alice the daughter? Have you tried finding an entry for her birth.........the only Mary Jane Lockley born in Staffs within time frame that I could find: Births Jun 1871 LOCKLEY Mary Jane Wolverhampton 6b 525 Suzanne I have also tried to follow this trail....wow what a lot of Lockleys!!! Its strange that the family from 1881 doesnt seem to be about in 1871...they seem to have disbanded, gone into hding or they were all lying about their ages and areas of birth!!! I really wish I could say Ive solved your puzzle but alas no.
