Hi Kate, The cert is from the GRO so i may call the Sheffield Register Office up and see how to go about getting their copy. I might go or the baptism way first though, if i can find the right parish church with it being in Sheffield, the next time i get chance to go to the archives i will have a look for it. Regards Claire x |

'Ickle C' - it is possible that somebody made a mistake copying out the birth certificate. Perhaps the original said Harriet but somebody copied it out as Elizabeth. If you have a GRO copy you could try asking the local register office to check in their records to see what the mother's name is there. If the copy you have is a local register office one, if it is not an actual photocopy of their entry, i.e. somebody has written or typed it out, again, you could ask them to check. I have a GRO copied-out copy of one certificate which is absolutely riddled with errors, but luckily I only acquired it after I already had the correct one, or I would still be puzzling over it! If all the above fails, perhaps you can find a baptism entry for him and see what his mother's name is on there? Kate. |

Tell me about it Heather, lol. This Eastwood family are a nightmare. I have just started a website with my family history on there, got to the Eastwoods, dug out the file and saw why i gave up on them. Son William Henry 1869 known as Harry on all census apart from the 1901! On the 1891 he is Harry Booth!!!!!! Turned out that Booth is William's wife's maiden name. Mananged to prove they were mine by getting the child on there's birth cert which showed them as the right parents. Then Harriet or Elizabeth, why couldnt they stick to one name. Claire x |

Hi Claire I had something similar, a girl named Mary in the family married Henry, I couldn't find Henry and Mary in a census but kept seeing Edward and Mary. Luckily for me, Mary had two illegitimate children who were with Edward and Mary on one census. Edward and Mary named a son Henry! They like to confuse us, lol. Heather |

Hi. Harriet/Elizabeth didnt die, she is on the 1881 census with hubby William Henry. She is also with him on the 1891 census. He died before the 1901 but she is still going. William Henry is a file cutter on all the census i have of him. This is also on son William Henry's birth cert along with his own death cert. I suppose it could be a middle name but i have no proof of it at all. I have thought about the registrar hearing the name wrong but i dont see how you can take Harriet as Elizabeth. Claire x |

Or did Harriett die or was ill thats why she moved back with father?or she had had enough of him and walked out. and so William married a sister Elizabeth. or Elizabeth a middle name and she prefered that to Harriett. Jeanette |

Have you got birth certs for the kids you are sure are the right ones? Sounds to me like it is the same person, was her husband in an occupation where he would be away - ie. mariner? |

Hi Kath, On the marriage cert she is 22. There are 2 Harriet's registered in Sheffield in 1844 and 1845, I am thinking the 1845 one is mine as the other one has a middle name and mine has never had one at all on all the data i have. I could not find an Elizabeth Fowler at all around the same time. Claire x |

Sounds like it could be the same person, but have you managed to find a birth certificate for Elizabeth/Harriet? How old was she on the marriage certificate? Kath. x |

Hi All. I have a confusing situation over a person which looks like they are known by more than one name and would like your opinions to see if you would say they are the same person. I have got William Henry Eastwood who was born in Sheffield in August 1869 and the birth cert gives father as William Henry Eastwood and mother Elizabeth Eastwood formerly Fowler. The person who is confusing me is Elizabeth as all census information gives her as Harriet. I have got an 'Harriet Eastwood' living with a Charles Fowler and family in 1871 at Nether Hallam, Sheffield. Harriet has daughter Mary and son Harry Eastwood with her. (Harry is William Henry, confusing i know!!). There is no sign of husband William Henry with her although she does say she is married. I found a marriage for William Henry Eastwood to Harriet Fowler in 1866 and got the cert. Sure enough, father of Harriet is Charles Fowler with same occupation as the 71 entry. Would i be wrong to assume that Elizabeth is Harriet? William Henry (or Harry as he was better known as!) called his daughter Harriet as well. Thank you for reading this. Claire x |
