I had my two sons in the 1970's and the registrar visited the hospital twice a week, so that you could register the birth of your new baby there. I lot of the new mothers registered the births but didn't give a first name, because it hadn't been decided. Think there is a column at the end of the birth certificate for names added after registration. Kath. x |

I was told by a Registrar, in some places it is not unusual for the Registrar to visit the maternity units, so it is not surprising if the name have not been chosen in the first few days. Jennifer |

No nothing, I too have seen many male/female entries on 1837, whole pages in fact, but I really don't understand it happening in 1987. If you cannot think of a name in 6 weeks, then just call him junior!! Sam ________________________________________________ I just checked 1837, her christian name is there, maybe just an error on Ancestry. Sam |

Still surprised that that applies to more recent births though Sam.Think I did see one the other day in the 1970's,ie female Bloggs........guess its quite unusual. No alterations to the code or footnotes? |

Sam, Some people could take an age to decide on names and went ahead and registered without, if you search the GRO you will find numerous entries for births without christian names, they are listed at the end of the entries for the relevant surname. Say the name was Clark, they would be entered as Female CLARK or Male CLARK. Jennifer |

Thank you Bernice, I do know what her name is, I'm sure you cannot register a child without giving a christian name, but maybe I'm wrong. I was just checking dates to add her into my tree and I was confused that it only gave her surname & mother's maiden name, Sam |

I have a half brother & sister born '85 & '87. Can anyone tell me why there is only a surname for my half sister in 1987? Surname & mothers maiden name are correct & district, but why is the christian name missing? The child is living. How can a child be registered if there is no full name? Morning all..Sam :) |
