Cannot find my George Scothern anywhere in 61. If he's mistranscribed I wondered if anyone could suggest what other letter S could look like. Carole xx

An ''L'' sometimes...... I think my thread about places missing from the 1861 happens to be on this front page at the mo. Maybe he was living somewhere that has not survived the test of time? Merry

The thing is (and sure i am not alone in this ) those of us that 'do lots of looking' will have searched for him without his surname and are usually quite good at spotting something near, or nearly right. post his details again here

A capital S followed by a c could be misread as a capital H,making the name Hothern,or Hothem or even Hothein.

Thanks Merry and Jess I can't find any birth or marriage record for him. I only know his name from his daughters marriage cert. He's George Scothern. I found him in 71 and 81 census. In 71 hes 26 and 81 hes 38. Both say he was born in Kirkby Notts. In both census he is living there still. Carole

Another thing, if she was born in 52 that would make her 19 in 71 and they have a 7 year old son. Unless of course she wasn't the mother. Carole

Carol Have you tried Scothorn. I have Scotherns (from West Bridgford and St Marys, Nottm) and have noticed that often the name was spelt with an o. Kate :)

Kate Yes I have noticed that too. Also Scothorne. Carole

My Smoothy family have been transcribed as Timothy on two different censuses, as well as Lenorthey, so T and L are possibilities. But actually most capital letters can look like any other capitals when they are so florid. nell
