Richard Liversedge, born 11 Nov 1821, married Marion ?, born 1826, Scotland. I don't know when or where. They had two children in Scotland - Thomas, c1853, and Elizabeth, c1854. I can't find either birth. The next child was born in 1856 in Tadcaster, from where they move to Durham and then Middlesbrough. I have them on every census from 1861, but I can't find anything before their son Richard, who was born 28 Feb 1859, and died in March. Any suggestions as to what I can do to find the marriage and/or births of the children. I have searched ScotlandsPeople till I'm blue in the face with no success. (PS - if I don't reply, I'm not ignoring you. They stopped Internet Access at my work :( so I won't be back till I get home from work)

This may not help much, but is it possible that Marion wasn't the mother of the first 2 or 3 children? If you haven't found Richard's marriage to Marion or the births of the first 2 children, maybe he had a previous wife who was their mother? Oh, or it could be that they were Richard's step-children, i.e. born to Marion by a previous husband, then their surname was changed to Liversedge when Marion married Richard. Or indeed maybe they were Richard and Marion's but the parents didn't marry till after the first 2 were born? Kate.

Thanks Kate. I have Elizabeths marriage cert, and it states Richard to be her father. That's the reason I never looked for a marriage afterwards. I have since looked for one, and can't find one on FreeBMD. I have also looked on familyrelatives, and the only ones showing up are in Huddersfield, which is no where near any place that they lived. Richard died in 1875, so it must've been between 1851 and then.

Their daughter Margaret is listed as age 11 in 1871 and birthplace is given as Barnard Castle, Co. Durham, so this should be her birth reg.: Births Mar 1860 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- LIVERSEDGE Margaret Teesdale 10a 195 And if you get the birth certificate it will give you Marion's maiden name. Kate.

And this is their son James' birth (he was age 9 in 1871): Births Jun 1862 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- LIVERSEDGE James Teesdale 10a 210

As for Richard and Marion (or Mirrion)'s marriage, it probably took place in Scotland, but if you are looking for it in England then unfortunately FreeBMD and Family Relatives are unlikely to come up with it because FreeBMD is incomplete and Family Relatives only starts at 1866. So you would be best to search on 1837 online or on microfiches, but you won't know whether you have found the right marriage until you have Marion's maiden name from Margaret or James' birth cert anyway. Kate.

Thanks Kate. I just found Margaret and James' birth today. I don't see how knowing her maiden name will help though, when I can't even find ANY marriage for Richard lol I have searched Scottish Civil and OP records on ScotlandsPeople. I have tried English GRO records too. Other than going round every church in Scotland, I don't know what else to do lol I just asked Anthony, and this is what he said... 'By no means everyone who took a spouse in Scotland went through a formal marriage ceremony, as was the norm south of the border. Handfasting (or hamfesting) was a ceremony conducted at home and usually the only traces of them are found in the form of proclamations - intentions to marry - found in church registers. The absence of a marriage from www.Scotlandspeople.gov.uk means either 1. no formal marriage ever took place or 2. it took place pre 1855 in a denomination other than the established (Presbyterian) church. If you know the wife was not a Presbyterian, then look in the registers of her denomination. ' What's betting they never got married, and had their children baptised into some odd religion that doesn't keep any records lol

These are the possible marriages I have seen on FreeBMD but there may well be others not transcribed yet.... Marriages Sep 1838 --------------------------------------------------------------------- LIVERSEDGE Richard Huddersfield 22 204 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Jun 1842 --------------------------------------------------------------------- LIVERSEDGE Richard Leeds 23 376 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Mar 1849 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Liversedge Richard Leeds 23 447 The first two of these appear not to have married a Marion, but there are names missing from the page for the third one so it is the most likely... But not much use till you have Marion's maiden name... Kate.
