logging on at work: have just sent merry a message. The charles I was looking for today was not 'the' charles, but a cousin. Now on the 1891 census the 'original' has popped up. I really need to look up phebe harris ,nee biddle, and william harris on the 1861 census. I know this couple had a son william ,named after his dad in 1853, but he died at a few months. My theory is that I can't find the orignal charles on the 1861/71 census because of the mis-spelling of the name itchington, but I shall keep on trying |

I am convined, even if Lynne isn't Jess x ** nudged the thread with all the stuff on it. |

Lynda - Here's something to investigate. There's a boy on the 1861 census called Charles Biddle. He is a nephew in the 1861 household. 1861: >>>>Charles Biddle abt 1851 Long Itchington, Warwickshire, England Nephew Long Itchington Warwickshire John Biddle abt 1821 Long Itchington, Warwickshire, England Head Long Itchington Warwickshire Sarah Biddle abt 1825 Bourton, Warwickshire, England Wife Long Itchington Warwickshire In 1871 the same lad is still a Biddle, but now he is also a CARPENTER and has moved with his uncle to Oxfordshire... 1871: >>>>Charles Biddle abt 1851 Long Stchington, Warwickshire, England Nephew Deddington Oxfordshire John Biddle abt 1821 Long Stchington, Warwickshire, England Head Deddington Oxfordshire Mary Ann Knibbs abt 1844 Deddington, Oxfordshire, England Servant Deddington Oxfordshire Now, we know in 1881 your Charles Harris is a carpenter and has recently married. You will be interested to know that I cannot find Charles Biddle in 1881. Now, who is Charles Biddle??? I wonder if he was the product of this couple (but born before they got married)?: Name: BIDDLE, Phoebe Record Type: Marriages Quarter: December Year: 1852 District: Southam County: Northamptonshire Warwickshire Volume: 6d Page: 961 Spouse was WILLIAM HARRIS!!!!!! Here they are in 1861 (note they live in Oxfordshire): Joseph Harris abt 1855 All Saints Derby, Derbyshire, England Daughter Oxford St Thomas Oxfordshire Phoebe Harris abt 1831 Long Ritckington, Warwickshire, England Wife Oxford St Thomas Oxfordshire William Harris abt 1831 Bekinghamsh, Breason Lodger Oxford St Thomas Oxfordshire Not sure why their daughter is called Joseph, but that's a side issue lol. So maybe Phoebe Harris nee Biddle left her first-born with her family when she married William Harris. Later, Charles Biddle changed his name to Harris when he left home. I can confirm from the IGI that John Biddle (Charles Biddle's uncle in 1861 and 1871) was indeed a brother to Phoebe Biddle who became Mrs William Harris. The parents of John and Phoebe Biddle were Isaac and Jemima Biddle who had 11 children altogether in Long Itchington. Merry (exhausted!! lol) |
