I always believed Sean was the Irish John.

HI Lynne found this Eoin - (OH-en or OH-een) Irish= Latin Johannes. Irish names Eoin and Sean both derive from Johannes. Sean, from the French Jehan, was introduced to Ireland by Norman French centureis after Johannes became an Irish name. Christine

Lynne If found on IGI then this is notorious for innaccuracy and I would say that the Joannes is a mistranscription of the more correct Johannes. I have different ways of spelling Neale in my Irish History so you just have to take the various spellings on board. Janet

Johannes is Latin for John. Ireland, being a Catholic country, used a lot of Latin for their baptismal names in the church registers. Sean and Shane are Irish for John. Jacobus translates to James and sorry to have to say but all Irish registers will be brim full of Johannes and Jacobus! I hope you have a little more info than John Ford of Ireland or it will be like looking for the needle in the proverbial haystack. You must track him into a county to have any hope of tracing him. There are very few Irish Records are on the IGI and John Ford is more popular than maybe you realise. The more efficient way of tracing Irish Ancestors is through Griffiths Valuation Index and Tithe Aplotments as these are census substitutes around 1830ish for TA through to 1840's/1860's for GVI. I have just searched the IGI for any records of John Ford in Ireland. Most of the results came up with Joannes - Is this the Irish for John? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Lynne
