Hi all, I this hard to believe but I have the church entries to prove it, UNLESS she was telling 'porkie pies' about her age. One of my uncles married in 1930 and his wife was killed in an air raid in 1940. HER mum was WIDOWED before she married for the second time, and heres the catch SHE WAS ONLY 19 YEARS OLD when she married for the SECOND time. Now is that a record or not? She was married first in 1891, then and finally in 1895. So she must have been 15 when she married first time. Surely that wasnt legal even in those days? TED. |

Yes it was legal.I have a grt gran who was 15 when she married in 1871. The legal age then was 14 for girls & 12!!!!! for boys. Or vica versa, not sure which , but in any case 15 was over legal age. Shirley |

shirley, hi. bit young to be getting married that, although it was probably better than going as a domestic servant somewhere, which all the young girls seemed to do in those days. TED. |

In 1753 the age was fixed at 14 for men and 12 for women and this didn't change until 1929 when it was raised to 16 for both ( I had to look it up) Heather |

You haven't given the exact dates, but even if she wasn't lying about her age she could have been 16 when she married for the first time if the date was later in the year than her second wedding, if you see what I mean. For example, if she was born in July 1875 and her first wedding was Nov 1891 she would be 16, then if her second wedding was Feb 1895 she would be 19. Does this make sense? Kate. |

Hi Ted. Yes indeed very young. I went away to double check & it was the other way around 12 for girls & 14 for boys, with parental consent, In fact my grt gan wasnt yet 15 when she married as have her birth cert too and she was 14 years & 8 months altho the marriage cert states 15. Her spouse was 22!!!. These days he would be in trouble . Shirley |

hi all, we all think weve got something different in our trees but someone always comes up with more or less the same. Nowadays however, they dont get married, just go on having kids from the time they leave school till they reach the ripe old age of maybe 21. God help all future family historians looking for relatives, they might never find the father, probably one who stayed the night then scarpered, or maybe the one the following night, or the following night, or am I being an old foggie. If you find yourself shocked at the very young age for marriage, you should remember that until (1927????) there was no legal age of consent to sexual intercourse. So, there was no such crime as paedophilia....sickening, isn't it. Olde Crone |
