Finding an Evans in Wales?

Hi, I'm looking for Samuel Evans born c1867 in Wales. In the 1901 census he was living in Barnsley, S Yorks with wife Ada and sons Horace and Harold. It also says place of birth Glanarvon. Having searched for this place, the nearest I can get is Glan-yr-afon in Carmarthenshire. I've got his wedding certificate to Ada Mary Stretton in 1895 in Barnsley and it says his father was Samuel Evans and that he was a farrier. I feel really stuck now, there a quite a few Samuel Evans's in Wales and I don't know whether to put all my faith in the place of birth on the 1901 census. Any suggestions? Lisa.

Have you check the census 1871 - 1891 to see if the place of birth is the same? Sam x

I've searched through the census and haven't found a Glanarvon anywhere. Lisa

Hi Lisa, Have you tried finding either of the Samuel Evans on an earlier census? It`s possible that the place name is not quite as written on the 1901. Even Carnarvon sounds fairly similar, so I`d try other census options first to try and narrow it down. Good luck. Jay.

Hi Lisa, The only Glenarvon I could find was in NS Wales ie. Australia. I`ve looked on each census from the 1871 to 1891 but haven`t been able to find a Samuel Evans born in a place that would seem to tally with what you are searching for. Jay.

I think there are places called Glenavon and Glanavon. Maybe finding them on a map might give you names of nearby places and hopefully finding Samuel in a previous census naming that as his birthplace.

Have you looked to see how its transcribed on 1901 govt website as opposed to Ancestry? Have you seen the original image? I think its probably Caernarvon (Welsh Caernarfon) myself. Generally censuses give the county name first and sometimes just the county town, to stand as an abbreviation for the county, and then if you are lucky they give the placename too. nell

Hi Lisa, There is a Samuel Evans born 1867 in BLAENAVON, Monmouthshire. This sounds fairly near to what was transcribed on the 1901 census, especially to someone unfamiliar with the Welsh accent. He is on both the 1871 census and the 1881 census living with his grandfather and other family members. Good luck, I don`t envy you your Evans`s in Wales. LOL Jay. x
