Thanks for the information about out of country folk (and the net joke Keith). That is Thomas on the 1861 census and I can follow him until his death in 1926. He married Sarah Baldock in 1872 in Lincoln. He went from being a cordwainer (whatever that is) to a shoemaker - and my grandmother used to tell me that he made boots for the Duke of Wellington (Ha!) I presumed that he learned that trade in whichever service he was in - I understand that the Royal Artillery was based at Portsea but that is pure guesswork. Thank you all so much for your help with this. Lynne

The only people who are on the census but were not standing on British soil when they were enumerated are Royal Navy personnel (not merchant service) when their ships were at sea. If a Royal Navy ship was docked in a foreign port then those sailors are not included. Depending on which census you are looking at, any RN ships at sea will be found recorded either under County ''Royal Navy'' or under the Home Port town/city, then listed under the name of the ship (think that comes in the parish name box??) Hope that helps - though it may not help find your man!! Merry

Census only taken for people living in the country on that night, so fisherman at sea that night 'miss the net'. (Oh God!) Keith

Can anyone help with the disappearance of Thomas Ellis born 1845 in Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire? I can't find him anywhere. His family are still living in Lincoln at the time, but I think he may have been in the army or the navy. Thomas married in 1872 and his son was born in 1875 at Portsea Island. I wondered also if any census would have been taken of people living/working (or in the Services) out of the country? I have also been looking for fishermen that may have been at sea at the time - I know the census was taken if they are in dock but what about boats at sea? So much to learn!! Any help would be gratefully received. Lynne
