Hi, Can anyone tell me how to use Irfanview with the censuses on Ancestry? I managed to download it, but haven`t the faintest idea what to do next. I seem to remember someone on the board saying that it cuts off that awful thick black border round each printout, so you get a nice clear page. Jay. |

Hello, Don't use Irfanview myself but if you want to cut off the black border of images you should be looking to use the 'crop' feature. Is that anywhere to be found within Irfanview's menus? Cheers, Lynn |

Open the image in Irfanview Zoom out so you can see whole image on screen (use the minus sign on the tool bar or zoom out on the drop down view menu) Click in corner of image and drag to draw a dotty line around the part of the image you want (the arrow/pointer changes to a cross when you click and drag) Go to drop down edit menu and select 'crop selection' BINGO!! |

Thanks for the replies, and so glad I`m not the only one to struggle. It`s opening the census in Irfanview in the first place that I can`t get to grips with. If someone can tell me how to do that then I can try and take it from there. Thanks, Jay. |

From one computer struggler to another....! Have you managed to save the Ancestry census image onto your computer (by clicking the little picture of a floppy disc that says Save under it)? When you have done that, go to there the item is saved and right-click on it. Hopefully you will get a menu that includes the words, ''Open With''. If you click on open with, you should get a list of likey programs to open the census page with. If Irfanview isn't there, then at the bottom of the list it says, Choose Program. You would have to click there and then find Irfanview and click on it. Not sure this helps.....?? Merry |

or on the left of the Irfanview toolbar there's a picture of an open file - click on that and a drop down menu of files on your computer will appear. At the top of this are the words 'look in' and a box where you can navigate to 'desktop' 'my documents' or wherever you have saved your file. Then highlight the name of the file you saved and select 'open' |

Many thanks to Merry Monty and Judith. It looks like I`ll manage to get somewhere now, without the usual struggle. Jay. |
