I had this same problem with my grandparents... got all the kids birth certs and it gave her as his wife... but couldn't find a marriage... then someone on here found it... they married after they had all the kids and just a couple of years before she died!! So keep looking even years after the kids were born... can pay off. Anne:)))

The cert I sent for was for a Joseph Rose and Emma Woodhouse. The brides name wasn't transcribed on freebmd, so I took a chance and sent for the cert. BUT a penny is dropping! What do you think of this? The marrieage between Joseph and Emma WAS the right Joseph and Emma was his first wife, they had a baby called wiliam and Emma died soon afterwards or during birth. He than married Sophia later. A long shot I know, but perhaps I need to find a death for Emma. Still can't find marriage for Sophia and Joseph tho, so perhaps you are right, maybe they never married!!!!

I would look for a marriage around 1858/59 for Sophia and Jo. If they married that is. You actually had a marriage for the right names in the right area? Thats a big coincidence, isnt it. Get the birth cert of William and of Mary Ann.

Thanks, I guess you are right. Thank you - I did have them in 1861. Forgot to mention, I did find a marriage in 1848, sent for the cert and that wasn't them.

On freebmd there are two marriages for a Joseph Rose in the right time frame for the birth of William, however, neither of them to a Sophia, so it may mean (though of course not all marriages are transcribed yet) that Sophia was the second wife after all. If I were you Id get that birth cert to clear it up. I guess you have them in 1861? Note there is a big gap of 8 years between the second and third child (George and Mary Ann). I would look for Joseph marrying previously and Mary Ann being the first child of Sophia. 1861 England Census records matching your search for All Records > Census > 1861 England Census Viewing 1-6 Match Quality Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image Charles Pritchard abt 1850 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Visitor Birmingham Warwickshire George Rose abt 1852 Harbourne, Staffordshire, England Son Birmingham Warwickshire Joseph Rose abt 1825 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Head Birmingham Warwickshire Mary Ann Rose abt 1860 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Daughter Birmingham Warwickshire Sophia Rose abt 1827 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Wife Birmingham Warwickshire William Rose abt 1848 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Son Birmingham Warwickshire

I guess the best thing to do would be get the sons birth cert and then you could see who mum was and where she was at the time?

OK - I have searched and searched and searched!!! Something in my tree isn't adding up, so somewhere something is wrong. I think if I can find this marriage it may make sense. I am looking for a marriage between Sophia Richards and Joseph Rose, both of birmingham. Their first child was william born in 1848. However, Heather kindly found a sophia richards in 1851 for me, and I have assumed that this is my Sophia. She is living with her brother and unmarried. No sign of Joseph Rose or a child called William. So maybe this wasn't my Sophia, and that is why I am so confused. Or maybe William was Josephs son from a previous marriage - not found one. Clear as mud?
