Folio Numbers on censuses

I'm just showing off here, but if you come across census indexing material where folio numbers are given with ''r'' or ''v'' written after, these stand for ''recto'' and ''verso''. Recto is the front side of the folio (the one with the folio number on it) and verso is the backside (oops, sorry, reverse side!) of the census sheet. Merry |

The other important difference between folio & page numbers on the census is that folio numbers are unique within a given census piece - therefore a reference to a series/piece/folio (eg RG11/1100/54) is unique. Page numbers, on the other hand, were pre-printed in the enumerators books and therefore are repeated whenever a book was filled and a new one commenced. Therefore, there will be several pages with the same page number within any piece. The page number is only quoted to identify the side of the sheet (useful for us working with scanned images rather than the original paper copies). As mentioned above, the front has an odd page number & the back has even. Richard |

I suppose it makes sense for it to work that way. ''Folio'' means leaf/sheet, so it would label a single piece of paper - and help to get things in correct order if split up. Christine |

Let us all be grateful that PCC wills are now online. Folio numbers for those wills (usually in roman numerals) are, I think, every 8 pages. It used to take forever to find the right will. |

Convention is that it is the page before. The folio number on the right hand side covers the front and back of that page. |

All my page numbers are even ones. Can somebody please tell me if the folio no is on the previous page or the one after. I assume it must be on the previous page but just want to confirm Kat |
