Have recently found grandmothers details how & when she travelled from UK to Australia. Her sister died in 1931 in Morley, Yorkshire and I lost the trace after that - What I would like to know is: If they were still living at Yorkshire what would have been the closest Port to embark on. She embarked at Southampton - I'm not too sure of UK geography but I'm sure that's far away. What counties would incorporate Southampton? Cheers Janine |

Southampton is in Hampshire on the south coast of England - nearly as far from Yorkshire as you can imagine!! If she travelled from there i expect it was because it was the cheapest way?? Or more sailings from there than from other ports. Merry |

Thanks Merry, It was in 1938 - Have been trawling through the 1837.com pages for an entry of her parents deaths - Have covered up until 1947 now - At some stage I am bound to find them. I might start searching for a place that had weavers near Hampshire (this was listed on my grandmothers marriage certificate) Cheers Janine |

Perhaps she travelled on another ship from Liverpool down to Southampton. |

Grandmother (Kathleen Drake) listed her occupation as a Weaver on her marriage certificate in January 1939 in Australia - As she had only been here for 3 weeks before she got married her occupation must have been when she was in UK. However - This is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thankyou to all for your replies. Cheers Janine |

Certainly there is no connection between weaving and Hampshire in particular (in as much as I can't say, ''If she was a weaver she will have lived at XYZ in Hampshire''!!) I am not entirely sure what you are trying to find out? You know when and where she left the UK and how she got to Australia. Are you trying to find out her place and date of birth and parents, or perhaps something about her sister, or just why she travelled from Southampton? If it's your grandmother's ancestry you are after then what else do you know about her?? Age? Any parental details? etc etc Merry |

I expect she went from Southampton because that's where the boat left from! Just as people today travel someway to their nearest airport, or get the train from the nearest station. Generally speaking, ships left Liverpool for America and the East coast for northern Europe. South coast would be for France, Spain and points south. nell |
